The Great Escape: Up, Up and Away

The peace and tranquility of hot air balloon rides allow busy parents to get away from it all, literally!

Whether stress is work, family, or health-related, sometimes people just have to get away to find peace, tranquility and solitude from a hectic environment. And what could better provide the sense of getting away than soaring up and away on a hot air balloon ride?

Even this time of year, hot air balloon rides are readily available to Maryland residents and are about one hour long for about $250, but many businesses will offer shorter rides for about $150.

Because the rides are so memorable, they are often associated with special occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, and even marriage proposals. Champagne rides are common, and businesses often arrange special accommodations. Normally, only up to four passengers are allowed on the most popular size balloons. And, moms, take note – no small children allowed. You even have a good excuse to leave them home.

Flying altitudes are about 1,000 feet or sometimes higher, dependent on the wind and whatever is taking place below. Many riders who report being apprehensive about heights say that traveling in the balloon takes the fear away.

Balloon rides only fly the first hours after sunrise and the last hour or so before sunset. Rides can be scheduled any time of year, though some might prefer a warmer season (although the radiant heat from the burners warms things up quite a bit).

There is also a lack of wind chill because the balloon is moving at the same speed as the winds. Most businesses that offer these services take reservations all year.

There are a number of businesses within a couple of hours drive that offers balloon services. Most can be found on the Internet.

So the next time you feel as though you have to get away, think about going up, way up above the chaotic world below.
