Attention Taxpayers: Schools Pitch Budget Increase

How Prince George's County Schools would spend an additional $44 million and how you can have a say in the matter.

A larger budget could be in the works for Prince George’s County Public Schools for fiscal year 2016.

The CEO of the schools requests an increased budget in order to continue implementing educational programs and build the employee roster with quality educators.

“It is critical that we continue the course we set – so our students have the staff, programs, and supports to help them achieve academic excellence,” Chief Executive Officer of Prince George’s County Public Schools Dr. Kevin Maxwell said in a news release.

The $1.839 billion proposal, presented on Friday, is a 2.5 percent increase from last year’s $1.795 billion budget.

Maxwell wants to expand on programs for elementary to high school students including language immersion, International Baccalaureate, and Montessori. The plan also includes all-day kindergarten, Reading Specialists, and two new International High Schools to teach students English.

The public can get involved in the budget development process by attending any of the three public budget hearings located at the Sasscer Administration Building, 14201 School Lane in Upper Marlboro:

  • Jan. 20: 5 p.m., BOE Work Session / 7 p.m., Public Hearing
  • Jan. 27: 5 p.m., BOE Work Session / 7 p.m., Public Hearing
  • Feb. 10: 5 p.m., BOE Work Session / 7 p.m., Public Hearing

“The Board is committed to a thorough process of deliberation and public input that will ensure a budget that supports this vision of greatness,” Board Chair Dr. Segun said. “We share Dr. Maxwell’s goals to attract and retain high-quality personnel through competitive compensation.”
