Strangers Save Man's Life After Suffering A Heart Attack

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Two men have been recognized for their heroic actions when a man had a medical emergency after working out at the Roger Carter Community Center.

In early September, Howard County Police Corporal Bryan Borowski was off-duty and exercising at the Roger Carter Community Center in Ellicott City when he saw a man collapse after running on a treadmill who then went into cardiac arrest. Borowski and Robert West, a school nurse with Baltimore County Public Schools who was also exercising at the time, performed CPR and administered an AED shock. Their efforts helped the man regained consciousness, according to the police department.

Emergency workers who responded to the call for help said that the two men's quick thinking and immediate actions saved the man's life. An Ellicott City resident, Brett Sovereign underwent quadruple bypass surgery after his heart attack and now, four months later, has been able to resume most of his normal routine. The three men met up again at police headquarters so Sovereign could thank the two heroes for helping save his life.

"We commend Cpl. Borowski and Robert for their lifesaving measures and wish Brett a continued recovery," the Howard County Police Department stated.
