Big Week of News in the County
Patch offers a roundup of all the big news involving the County Executive and county schools, plus some details on destructive fires in the area.

Some days there is a ton of news locally, and other days the big stories are more national.
This past week saw some big news at the county level, with some surprising news from the County Executive and other good news involving local schools. Meanwhile, some communities dealt with some fires that displaced residents.

- There was a big announcement from County Executive Laura Neuman, who said she will veto a bill that would impose a stormwater fee on property owners. It remains to be seen whether the County Council will re-visit the issue or get votes in place to override a veto.
- While Neuman gets her feet wet, there are indications that Republican state delegate Steve Schuh will announce his intention to run for County Executive in 2014. Schuh had sought to be appointed to the position following the resignation of John R. Leopold earlier this year, but the county council selected Neuman.
- County Police Chief Larry Tolliver found himself fending off accusations that he retaliated against officers who complained about Leopold, according to reports.
- U.S. News and World Report released its rankings of high schools, and three local schools were ranked in the top 400 nationally. South River came in at 400th nationally, behind Broadneck and Severna Park.
- It was a bad week for fires, as at least three blazes struck homes in the county and displaced residents. In Annapolis on Thursday, a three-alarm fire hit the Watergate Village apartment complex. In Glen Burnie Thursday night, fires resulted in injuries to two residents and a firefighter, and at least eight animals were found dead.
