Major Cancer Study to Kick Off in Gambrills

The American Cancer Society is looking to begin a massive, long-term cancer prevention study, and plans to hold a kickoff event next month in Gambrills.

The Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3) is open to anyone between 30 and 65 years old and has never had cancer. Participants are asked to provide follow-up surveys for the next 20 to 30 years.

The kickoff event will take place July 18 at 6:30 p.m. at the Carver Staff Development Center. For those in the Anne Arundel County area, enrollment in the study will then take place from Sept. 15-21.

The cancer prevention studies are an effort to understand the lifestyle, gender and environmental factors that cause or prevent cancer. The two previous studies, which date back to the 1950s, established the link between cigarette smoking and lung cancer, and outlined the role obesity plays in raising cancer risk.
