5 Nonprofits To Get Behind In The Eldersburg Area

There is no shortage of organizations to volunteer with or that need your help in the Eldersburg area. Here are five to support.

ELDERSBURG, MD β€” Nonprofit groups are keystone community organizations in the Eldersburg area. Fortunately, there is no shortage of organizations to volunteer or get behind financially, and that need your help.

Here are five outstanding nonprofit groups you should know about in the Eldersburg area:

1. Human Services Programs of Carroll County Inc.: Human Services Programs of Carroll County, Inc. is a nonprofit Community Action Agency that was originally founded in 1987 by Sylvia Canon Haines. Over the past 30 years, HSP developed programming to meet the unique needs of Carroll County residents struggling with poverty. Each of its 18 current programs was created in response to an unmet need in our community.

2. The Humane Society of Carroll County: The Humane Society of Carroll County has been advocating for the health and proper care of animals for nearly 75 years. In 1945 a group of concerned citizens formed the Humane Society of Carroll County. In 1981 a new county animal shelter was opened where it stands today. The Humane Society had six employees at that time. Today, the Humane Society of Carroll County employs 14 full time and six part-time staff members and adopts out numerous animals each year.

3. Carroll County Habitat For Humanity: Habitat for Humanity of Carroll County is part of a global, nonprofit housing organization operated on Christian principles that seek to put God’s love into action by building homes, communities and hope. Habitat for Humanity has a strong history in Carroll County. Habitat is the only nonprofit focused on the creation and preservation of affordable homes in Carroll County.

4. South Carroll Lioness-Lions Club: The South Carroll Lioness-Lions Club was formerly the Freedom District Lioness Club, which was certified in 1985. In 2011, the club was officially chartered as the South Carroll Lioness-Lions Club, with 45 charter members and two associate charter members. Among the club's many projects are providing college scholarship to two seniors β€”one at Liberty High School and one at Century High School, providing a Thanksgiving dinner, Christmas dinner and Christmas gifts for families in need, and providing funds to purchase Christmas presents for residents at Springfield Hospital.

5. Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department: The Sykesville-Freedom District Fire Department is a volunteer department and is supplemented by career staffing that is partially paid for by the Carroll County Government. The fire department welcomes fundraising efforts by local organizations, HOAs, or any group or person that would like to donate money to the department.
