Sports have a way of teaching invaluable life lessons β€” building character, fostering teamwork and strengthening the bonds within a community. In the Eldersburg area, these values have shaped some truly remarkable athletes from different eras, whose accomplishments continue to inspire.

Patch has teamed up with T-Mobile to spotlight five standout athletes whose achievements have left a lasting mark on our community. While this list is just a snapshot, there are countless others who have helped shape the rich sports culture in our area.


Christopher Brooks (Wrestling)

Christopher Brooks (Class of 2025) is a standout wrestler for Century High School. He has shown dedication both in-season and in the off-season, training with Warhawks Wrestling Club to sharpen his skills. He placed 4th in the county at his weight class and earned an Honorable Mention All-County selection.

Julian Woods (Track & Field)

Julian Woods was an elite hurdler and jumper for Century High School who graduated in 2013. He won three individual state titles in the 110m hurdles, 300m hurdles and long jump, while also anchoring the 4x200m relay team to a state championship. Woods’ performance helped Century High win the 2A Maryland state title by a 49-point margin, and he was recognized as the Carroll County Times Boys Indoor Track Athlete of the Year. Academically, he maintained a 4.07 GPA, tutored students in physics, and interned in the dental field while balancing athletics. He went on to compete for Mount St. Mary’s College on an athletic scholarship.


Katie Schwarzmann (Lacrosse)

One of the most decorated women’s lacrosse players in history, Katie Schwarzmann-Haus was a two-time Tewaaraton Trophy winner at Maryland, leading the Terrapins to an NCAA title in 2010. She graduated as third all-time in Maryland history with 228 goals and 304 points and went on to represent Team USA, winning gold at the 2013 FIL World Cup. Schwarzmann-Haus was also the first-ever No. 1 pick in the United Women’s Lacrosse League draft. She now works alongside her sister, Lauren Schwarzmann Skellchock, at Mount St. Mary’s University.

Lauren Schwarzmann (Lacrosse, Soccer, Basketball)

A multi-sport athlete at Century High School, Lauren Schwarzmann Skellchock played lacrosse, soccer and basketball. She earned eight varsity letters and led Century to its first state lacrosse title in 2004. She went on to play lacrosse at Johns Hopkins University, where she was a four-time All-Conference selection and a member of Team USA from 2008 to 2013. Schwarzmann Skellchock has been head lacrosse coach at Mount St. Mary’s for over a decade, leading the team to multiple conference championships. She has also coached at Stanford and Cincinnati and serves on USA Lacrosse’s National Team Development Program.


Taylor VanBrackle (Soccer)

Former Liberty High School soccer player Taylor VanBrackle went on to compete at Eastern University. He completed two successful seasons and earned the title of Rookie of the Year in 2006. VanBrackle was inducted into the Liberty High School Hall of Fame in 2025.
