Alexa Goldbloom, a seventh grade student at Sykesville Middle School, was awarded 2nd place in the Together We’re Better Artwork Contest for middle schools. The contest was sponsored by ARC Maryland, in partnership with the Developmental Disabilities Council, the Maryland State Department of Education, and the Maryland Department of Disabilities.
Together We’re Better is a school inclusion program designed to raise awareness of the value and importance of inclusion of students with disabilities. One component of the program is an art contest for elementary and middle school students. Following the theme from National Inclusive Schools Week, Rebuilding Our Inclusive Community Together, students were invited to create and submit a personal work of art that explored why it is important to have friends of all abilities; what they have learned about themselves and others through this awareness campaign on how we are better together; or what steps they need to take to reach a fully inclusive culture in their school.
