Century High Named Blue Ribbon School

Century High School was named a Blue Ribbon School on Wednesday, becoming the first high school in the Carroll County Public Schools system to earn the distinction.

The award honors public schools with students performing at high levels or showing significant improvements in achievement, according to a news release from the school system.

"Excellence in education matters and we should honor the schools that are leading the way to prepare students for success in college and careers," U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan said. "National Blue Ribbon schools represent examples of educational excellence, and their work reflects the belief that every child in America deserves a world-class education."

The school, alongside the other award-winners, will be honored at a ceremony on Nov. 18-19 in Washington, D.C.

Century High School opened in Sykesville in 2001 and has been honored as one of the nation's best by Newsweek and the Washington Post, according to the school's website.
