Elkridge Defense Company to Expand

FLIR's vice president of operations Roger Wells announced recently that the company is set to expand its Elkridge location in a move that will double the company's current space.

FLIR, which makes thermal imaging and infrared cameras for police and military uses as well as the private sector, will soon move across the street from its current location at 6610 Amberton Drive, said Wells.

The announcement came as Governor Martin O'Malley and Howard County Executive Ken Ulman warned of the negative effects the looming sequester may have on local business such as FLIR.

Wells said at a recent press conference that the sequester, automatic cuts in defense and domestic spending at the federal level, has slowed down hiring and investment plans for FLIR.

In November, the company was awarded an $88 million contract to develop advanced sensors and support equipment for detecting and decontaminating chemical warfare agents for the National Guard, according to Photonics.com. That work will take place at the Elkridge facility, reported Photonics.com.
