Driver Killed In Crash After Fleeing Police Has Been Identified

Howard Co. police have identified the driver killed in a crash with a utility pole while running from an officer who tried to pull him over.

ELLICOTT CITY, MD — The driver killed Sunday after crashing into a utility pole while attempting to speed away from a police officer has been identified as Nehemiah Ricks, 19, of Hagerstown, authorities said Tuesday.

Around 9:38 a.m. on Sunday, an unmarked Howard County police vehicle attempted to stop a 2013 Honda Accord driven by Ricks in the area of Route 29 and Rogers Avenue. Instead of stopping, Ricks drove off, police said.

The officer did not follow, and turned off the emergency equipment, according to the department.

A short time later, Ricks' vehicle struck a utility pole while southbound on Rogers Avenue just past Faber Way.

Ricks, who was the only person in the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash continues to be investigated.
