Lorien Health Services, a family-owned assisted living and nursing home company and industry innovator based in Maryland, announced today that it has been designated as a Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care™ recipient.
Lorien is the only assisted living company in Maryland to receive the prestigious Purple Flag designation, which indicates that it has met rigorous industry standards and criteria related to safety, quality of care, and overall resident experience in caring for people with dementia and Alzheimer’s.
Lorien also announced the grand opening of its new dementia care unit, Harmony Park, which features a unique design that brings the outdoors inside, creating a beautiful, lush space that resembles a park-like setting complete with a tree as the center of the space, a sensory wall, and an Italian café. This goal of this setting is to aid in calming and engaging residents. Harmony Park is located at 6336 Cedar Lane in Columbia, MD.

Kevin Heffner, President of LifeSpan Network, which represents more than 500 senior living provider organizations across the State of Maryland, said: “Lorien has been an integral part of our association for many years, consistently demonstrating leadership and innovation in senior care. We are proud to recognize Lorien Harmony Hall as the first Purple Flag-accredited community in Maryland and among our distinguished members. The opening of Harmony Park and the achievement of this accreditation reflect Lorien’s ongoing commitment to quality, compassion, and person-centered care."
Lorien held a Purple Flag ceremony and a ribbon cutting for Harmony Park Wednesday, October 29th.
Lorien’s dementia care program is led by Victoria Rosier, who for more than a decade, has specialized in dementia care and is Harmony Hall’s Executive Director.
“Lorien wants to make a difference in the lives of those impacted by Alzheimer's and dementia,” said Rosier, who earned her first dementia certification in 2014 and is a Certified Dementia Practitioner. “We want to take the care for these residents to the next level by providing excellence in not only the physical environment, but also in the programming and activities that we've developed ourselves.”
Residents are provided with a variety of restaurants that offer non-alcoholic cocktails in partnership with Sobar to promote much needed hydration and gourmet pureed meals to ensure that the residents are enticed to eat. Way-finding signage and colored paths guide residents from one area to the next and the ceiling above the tree reflects the time of day and weather conditions with clouds, sun, stars, and the moon.
Rosier said, “When you ride up the elevator, the doors open up to Lorien’s version of Central Park. It is amazing. The sunlight is therapeutic. I'm very excited about it.”
