Speed Limit Lowered On Busy Stretch Of Howard County Highway

The speed limit has been lowered along a stretch of road in Howard County. New signs have been posted alerted drivers to the change.

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Drivers should be aware that the speed limit has been lowered on a half-mile section of road in Howard County.

After the State Highway Administration wrapped up a traffic study of US 1 (Washington Boulevard), it was determined that for safety's sake, the speed limit along a stretch of that highway needed to be reduced. New signage and pavement markings showing the new speed limit of 40 miles per hour on US 1 (Washington Blvd) between Bonnie View Lane and Greenfield Road have been installed.

“While vehicle speed is a critical factor in pedestrian safety, we recognize the need for a multiprong approach,” said district engineer Andrew Radcliffe, Jr. “The State Highway Administration continues to work on additional improvements in this area.”

The State Highway Administration also will be working to improve the intersections of US 1 at Doctor Patel Drive and US 1 at Rowanberry Drive. The US 1 at Doctor Patel Drive portion of the project will construct a new full-color traffic signal with crosswalks and new Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant ramps. The US 1 at Rowanberry Drive portion of the project includes new sidewalks with ramps, crosswalks and pedestrian signals.

Each project is scheduled to start construction in spring 2025.
