Craig Announces Haddaway as Running Mate in Maryland Governor's Race

Delegate Jeannie Haddaway brings perspective from the Eastern Shore to the Harford County executive's 2014 gubernatorial ticket.

Harford County Executive David Craig, who lives in Havre de Grace, has announced his running mate in the race for Maryland governor: Eastern Shore Delegate Jeannie Haddaway.

Craig and Haddaway held their hands up together at the closing of a press conference Tuesday morning in Annapolis on Lawyer's Mall, Annapolis Patch reported.

Haddaway (R-Eastern Shore) has been a member of the House of Delegates since 2003.

In selecting his running mate, Craig said a key point was whether his lieutenant could effectively lead as a governor. He said Haddaway had that quality, and brings with her a focus on local government that's lacking from current politics.

"She represents one of the largest areas on the Eastern Shore—a part of our state that has truly been forgotten by this monopoly that exists in Annapolis," Craig said. "She knows the forgotten Marylanders."

Craig also used the phrase "forgotten Marylanders" in a June 3 press conference in Havre de Grace, where he announced his candidacy and said that state government was increasingly taxing its people without serving their needs.

Haddaway also criticized the existing state leadership, saying local leaders have faced an uphill battle.

"We cannot afford to have another governor and lieutenant governor who are going to do more of the same," Haddaway said. "If you put the citizens and the interests of this state first, the rest will fall into place."

The Craig-Haddaway ticket is among the first to be entered into the race for governor of Maryland. The election will take place in November 2014.
