Drop Off Excess Medications At State Police Barrack Saturday

National Drug Take Back Day is Saturday and Harford County is offering several drop off locations, including the Maryland State Police barrack located in Benson on the outskirts of Fallston.

Harford County residents can dispose of unused medications in a safe and environmentally friendly way between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at four locations in the county.

Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem nationwide and Harford County is no exception, according to Harford County law enforcement officials.

In a community meeting last year, Sheriff L. Jesse Bane said drugs are the biggest problem the county faces, and prescription drug abuse is a major part of that.

"Prescription drug abuse is the nation's fastest-growing drug problem, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has classified prescription drug abuse as an epidemic," states the Office of National Drug Control Policy's website.

Before drug take back days were started, there was no legal way to turn in controlled substances for disposal, according to a release from Maryland State Police.
