Humane Society to Let Adopters Pick 'Purr-Fect Price'

The program is aimed a finding homes for the annual summer influx of kittens and mothers.

Humane Society of Harford County officials want prospective cat owners to name their price.

The new campaign, titled "Pick Your Purr-Fect Price," comes with no set adoption fee, officials announced in a release Tuesday.

The summer months are tough for the Fallston-based organization, Executive Director Mary Leavens said in the release, due to the numbers of kittens and pregnant mothers taken in by the shelter.

“Our primary goal is to help find forever homes for as many adoptable animals as possible," Leavens said. "This program has proven to be a very effective method to greatly increase cat adoptions at numerous shelters across the country.”

The humane society spends more than $150 on every cat it shelters for immunizations, food, spaying, neutering and other services, according to the release. For pets that have not yet been spayed or neutered, prospective owners must pay a $50 deposit, which is refunded if the procedure is completed within 60 days, or 60 days after a kitten reaches 6 months old.
