University health officials will not say the exact number of cases that have been confirmed.

The University of Maryland, College Park, has confirmed an outbreak of viral meningitis on campus, but the director of the University Health Center will not give an exact number of confirmed and suspected cases.

In a statement to CBS DC, Dr. David McBride wrote:

“There are confirmed and suspected cases of viral meningitis and viral syndromes on campus, and they are being tracked carefully by the University Health Center in partnership with the Prince George’s County Health Department. We have reached out to the organizations that are primarily affected with information about the condition and what to do in the event that they are feeling unwell.”

Viral meningitis is often a less severe than bacterial meningitis, according to the Centers for Disease Control. Symptoms of viral meningitis include nausea, vomiting, photophobia (sensitivity to light), stiff neck, severe headache and an altered mental state.

The Greek Life community at UMD has seen a high number of cases in members, according to WJLA. Leaders of fraternities and sororities have passed out fliers with information on the outbreak and prevention tips.

“I don’t want to get sick,” sophomore Zachary Greenberg told the news station. “I live in a [fraternity] house with a bunch of guys so I’m not sure everyone’s like 100 percent healthy.”

A UMD spokeswoman told WJLA the university has long offered meningitis vaccines and requires all students to be vaccinated.

Prevention methods from the CDC are:

  • Wash your hands thoroughly and often
  • Disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as doorknobs and the TV remote control
  • Avoid kissing or sharing cups or eating utensils with sick people; avoid sharing with others when you are sick
  • Make sure your vaccinations are up to date
