Gov. Martin O'Malley has declared a state of emergency for the state in advance of Hurricane Irene. The storm was classified as a Category 3 hurricane Thursday afternoon. It is expected to strengthen as it leaves the Bahamas and moves toward the East Coast of the United States, including Maryland this weekend. O'Malley cancelled a media event for this afternoon and will hold a news conference at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency center in Reisterstown at 3:30 p.m.
