Eddie's Celebrates 70-Year Anniversary with Festivities on Charles Street

The specialty grocer has planned a week filled with cake, demonstrations and a glimpse into store's future.

Eddie’s of Roland Park is dishing out free cake to customers Monday through Wednesday as it celebrates its 70th birthday.

To mark this milestone, the gourmet grocer is also offering culinary demonstrations, meet-and-greet opportunities with vendors, one-day sales and other in-store surprises at its two store near Roland Park.

Eddie’s opened its flagship store at 5113 Roland Avenue in 1944, with founder Victor Cohen at the helm. The location at 6213 North Charles Street opened in 1992 to provide gourmet grocery options to those in Baltimore County.

Cohen’s daughter and grandson currently run the two stores, according to a statement from Eddie’s.

During the weeklong 70th anniversary celebration, store leaders will also unveil renovations coming to the Charles Street location; the renovations will start in 2015. The designs are nearly done and will involve a revamp of the bakery and cheese departments, new freezer and meat cases plus more efficient lighting to create an overall ”feeling of openness,” owner Nancy Cohen told Baltimore magazine.

The celebration at Eddie’s will continue from Oct. 12 to Oct. 18. A food festival will cap off the week from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18.
