MDSPCA Offers Free Cats to Good Homes

If you’re looking for a new feline friend, the in Hampden has 12 cats it’s looking to give away.  

Through Sunday, interested residents will be able to adopt one of these cats that are at least 3 years old at no charge as part of the organization’s attempt to find homes for older cats during the summer "kitten season," Executive Director Aileen Gabbey said.

"As nice as our new building is, it’s not a home," said Gabbey, who noted that the Maryland SPCA generally sees more kittens during the warmer months.

Gabbey attributed the increase in kittens to more stray cats giving birth. Because customers are more likely to adopt kittens, she said, it becomes more challenging to place older cats in homes.

When residents come to the facility, they’ll be asked to take a personality test that will help line them up with a cat whose personality gels with their lifestyle. They’ll then be give a color-coded card that will match-up with cards placed on the cats cages to let them know which animal is compatible with their lifestyle. They can then spend time with the animal in a meeting room.

"We encourage people to meet with the cat," Gabbey said.  

Gabbey also said that the nonprofit, which spayed and neutered 9,000 animals last year, is using the event to remind residents to fix their pets.

"The more who do it, the fewer unwanted kittens we’ll have," Gabbey said.
