Baby Seriously Hurt in Jessup Crash, Was Not in Car Seat

Police said the boy was sitting in the lap of a passenger in the front seat of a Dodge Caravan when it collided with another car on Clark Road.

A 4-month-old boy has critical injuries after a head-on collision involving two vehicles Wednesday night in Jessup.

Police said the boy's father, who was driving at the time of the crash, showed signs of possible alcohol use but no charges have been filed as the investigation is still underway.

The boy was in the lap of a passenger in the front seat of a van when the crash occurred, according to police.

The crash reportedly happened at about 6:05 p.m. Wednesday. Investigators determined that the boy's father, 30-year-old Matthew Dale Mitchell, was the driver of a Dodge Caravan that crossed the center line near Clark Road and Youse Avenue and struck a Mitsubishi Eclipse.

The boy was rushed to Johns Hopkins Children's Center in Baltimore and is in critical condition, according to police.

Mitchell and two occupants of the Mitsubishi Eclipse were also hurt but all three are in stable condition, police said. One passenger in the minivan was unhurt.

Police are continuing to investigate.
