BALTIMORE, MD — Southwest Airlines on Thursday said it plans to add new nonstop service next year from Baltimore-Washington International Airport to Knoxville, Tennessee.

Baltimore is one of three cities scheduled to begin round-trip flights to Knoxville's McGhee Tyson Airport on March 5, 2026. Other cities added to the airline's route map include Dallas and Orlando.

“As a top global travel destination and business hub, Tennessee is the ideal location for Southwest Airlines to expand, and we welcome them to Knoxville,” said Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee.

Southwest also said that by the end of August, the company plans to announce another destination, where "the ocean wears two shades of blue and every landing feels like an adventure."

In addition to the new routes, BWI Airport is continuing major capital improvements that will add new amenities for passengers while providing important infrastructure to support airline service.

The work includes the Concourse A/B connector and baggage handling system, the largest capital project in the airport’s history.

According to airport officials, the project will support Southwest Airlines by creating the following:

  • A direct connection between Concourses A and B
  • A new, sophisticated baggage handling system
  • Expanded seating areas at passenger gates
  • New restrooms
  • Added food and retail concessions

Currently, BWI Airport offers more than 300 daily nonstop departures to about 90 domestic and international destinations. The airport and visitors also produce and support more than 107,000 jobs throughout Maryland and the region.
