Sandy in West County: Monday Evening Update

As night fell onto the areas of Odenton, Severn and Crofton, Hurricane Sandy brought stronger winds and heavier rains. 

Residents braced themselves for an intense storm overnight. But for the most part, the area was holding its own against the storm.

There were relatively few power outages to report in the area, though the power was out near the intersection of Route 3 and Annapolis Road, and along sections of the Route 3 corridor. 

Most major neighborhoods still had electricity, though there were reports of outages in the Delmont Station development in Severn and off California Terrace in Gambrills. A BGE outage map indicated roughly 1,500 outages in Severn and a smattering in Odenton and Gambrills. 

On Annapolis Road in Gambrills, debris from a fallen tree forced the closure of the road near the intersection of McKnew Road. 

Patuxent Road in Odenton remained open to traffic, but history suggests that road should be avoided until the storm passes. 

All traffic lights in the area were operational. 

As of 6 p.m. nearly all business were closed, except for the new Wegmans at the Waugh Chapel Towne Centre, as well as several liquor stores along Annapolis Road. A handful of pizza shops remained open, along with the Lucky's Superette in Odenton. 

Some important pieces of information: 

• Schools are closed Tuesday
• There will be no MARC train service Tuesday. An update on Wednesday service will come Tuesday evening. 
• BGE reported that there were 85,000 customers without power, but only 6,483 were in Anne Arundel County. BGE restored service to 7,313 customers in the county.
