September Odenton Heritage Society Open House

Learn about how Odenton's setting in the Severn and Patuxent River watersheds shaped the town's growth.

Underground Odenton: The World Beneath Your Feet

A photographic display at the Odenton Heritage Society (OHS) Historical Center on September 7th will show how Odenton’s setting in the Severn and Patuxent River watersheds shaped the town’s growth. See how 18th century roads still in use today follow high ground between the two watersheds. Learn about underground natural features such as Picture Spring and streams that flow from a single hill to tributaries of the Severn and Patuxent. Study mining activities and see how water supply became essential to Odenton’s grist mills, sawmills, steam locomotives, and hydraulic presses, making industry and transportation possible. Study tree trunks well over a century old that still serve as floor joists in historic buildings, and peer into fallout shelters from the Cold War. Immerse yourself in other displays on the Civil War, railroad history, and local businesses.

The OHS Historical Center, located at 1367 Odenton Road, is home to the OHS community history museum. We welcome visitors during our Open Houses on the first Sunday of each month from 1PM–4PM. As always, admission and guided tours with costumed docents are free. While you’re here, please consider becoming a member — your support helps us continue our all-volunteer missions to preserve and protect the history of Odenton.
