Opinion: The Most Iconic Thing in Pikesville

From the Maryland State Police headquarters and the palm trees at Jilly's Bar and Grill, to 7-Mile Market, Pikesville Patch Facebook fans told us what's iconic about our community.

"Shabbos evenings," said Hetty Cassutto Haden, who also mentioned 7-Mile Market, a large, all-kosher market located in downtown Pikesville

Shabbos is the Yiddish word for Shabbat—the seventh day of the week in Judaism, known as the sabbath.

These mentions are important.

Pikesville's Jewish population is the largest in the Baltimore Metro area, according to The Associated's 2010 Greater Baltimore Jewish Community Study. The study estimates there are 31,000 Jewish people in 13,000 Jewish households in Pikesville—33 percent of the total Jewish population of 93,400 in the metro area.
Another reader mentioned one Jewish congregation in particular: Beth El.

7-Mile Market, the historic Maryland State Police headquarters, and "Jilly's palm trees" were also brought up as Pikesville icons.

Other comments from Facebook readers included the idea that there are "bad drivers," and that there's lots of horn-honking. However, another reader says there are bad drivers everywhere.
