Vintage Pikesville: Confederate Veterans

About 20,000 Marylanders served in the Confederate army during the United States Civil War--in this photo, a group of Confederate veterans gathers around a pot-bellied store at a Confederate Soldier's Home in Pikesville.
The photo, which dates to the early 20th century, was downloaded with permission from the Baltimore County Public Library Legacy Web photo collection.
The Confederate Soldier's home in the photo, located on Reisterstown Road, was established in 1889, according to a Maryland Historical Trust document. That document is attached to this article as a .pdf.

Before becoming a home for Confederate veterans, the property stood for 74 years as the U.S. Arsenal at Pikesville. Today, it serves a different purpose and only two of the original structures remain intact, the document states.
