County Libraries Launch Summer Reading Program

Summer’s here and with it means plenty of time to lounge by the pool or in a hammock with a good book.

Montgomery County Public Libraries launched its summer reading program today, providing reading lists and summer activities for youth around the county. Families can sign up for the program and log the number of books they read by visiting the library website. Those who read five or more books this summer will be able to print out a certificate showing the accomplishment.

Reading lists, specified for each age and grade level, are available on the library website.  This year’s themes are “Read to Me” for kids through preschool, “Dream Big” for children in kindergarten thru sixth grade and "Own the Night" for teenagers.

Events for kids, families and teens are scheduled for libraries across the county.

June’s family events at the include:

“Spectacular Science!” a free summer program for kids grades K-5 and families. Bubbling potions and cool chemical reactions turn students on to science! The event begins at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

“Dreams, Schemes and Magic Things” a free summer program featuring Mike Rose and magic tricks. Rose will tell the story of how a gift from his grandfather, a 100-year-old magic book, changed his life. The event begins at 6 p.m., Thursday, June 21.
