Winston Churchill HS Senior Dies On Family Vacation After Tragic Fishing Accident In Mexico (dailyvoice.com) — Potomac residents are mourning the death of Winston Churchill High School senior Levi Shum, who died in a fishing accident while on vacation in Mexico. School leaders have shared condolences with families and are offering on-campus counseling and other support to help students and staff cope with the loss.
   

2. Potomac native gets a chance to make Nationals this spring (thebanner.com) — A Potomac native, first baseman Matt Mervis, just signed a minor-league deal with the Washington Nationals and will head to spring training with a real shot at making the big-league roster. The Georgetown Prep grad grew up a devoted Nats fan and is sharpening his hitting and defense this winter to seize the opportunity to play at Nationals Park for the first time.

State property taxes show slower growth (mymcmedia.org) — Potomac homeowners are seeing property values jump more than 12%, which means higher 2026 tax bills despite the county’s 10% cap on annual increases. The state’s latest assessments, mailed December 30, show strong but slowing growth, and residents can still appeal or seek relief through the Homeowner’s Property Tax Credit program.
   

4. Climate Action Plan Update Shows Electric Fleet Expansion, Zero-Fare Transit (mocoshow.com) — Montgomery County’s latest Climate Action Plan update includes a new Mesonet weather station in Potomac, giving local emergency officials better real-time data for storms and flooding. The report also highlights zero-fare Ride On buses, expanded electric vehicle fleets, stricter building efficiency standards, and major tree planting and clean energy investments aimed at cutting emissions countywide.
