Metrobus Begins Testing Real-Time Bus Signs

If you’ve ever struggled trying to figure out how long until your bus arrives, this is some great news.

On Thursday, Metro began installing four real-time signs for a testing period. The signs use GPS technology to determine how many minutes until the buses arrive. They will also show emergency messages along with detour information and travel tips.

The bus signs are being tested at the following locations:

• D.C.: Eastbound H Street NW at 7th Street
• Virginia: Pentagon Transit Center
• Maryland - Montgomery County: Southbound Viers Mill Road at Randolph Road
• Maryland - Prince George’s County: Silver Hill Road at Pennsylvania Avenue

If the testing is successful, 150 more will be installed throughout the region in the spring.

“This project is a centerpiece of our ongoing effort to give bus customers the tools they need for an easy, convenient travel experience,” Director of Metrobus Planning, Scheduling and Customer Facilities James Hamre said in a news release. “Just by looking up, the new signs quickly and clearly answer the question, ‘Where’s my bus?’”
