Top 5: Community Mourns Marine, Holy Grounds Renovation

1. Severna Park Mourns the Loss of Marine Taylor Wild

Patch editors wrote a series of stories on the death of Lance Cpl. Taylor Wild, 21, a 2010 graduate of Severna Park High School, who was killed in a training event during which a mortar round exploded inside an artillery tube, according to his obituary. Marine Corps officials said that the incident occurred shortly before 10 p.m. Monday at Hawthorne Army Depot, NV. 

2. Holy Grounds Renovations Still Underway

Those eager to get a look at the remodeled Holy Grounds at the Severna Park Community Center have had to wait a little longer than expected.

The $15,000 in renovations, being done by Home Depot, have been delayed due a variety of reasons and because the floor was in need of more work.

3. SPMS Middle School Student Interviews Meteorologist Justin Berk

A Severna Park Middle student got to interview meteorologist Justin Berk and get a taste of the reporting world thanks to an online magazine called My-Say.

My-Say is an online publication written by, and for, middle school students across the state. It offers tweens and teens the opportunity to explore, learn and write about issues that interest them.

4. Severna Park Native Among Those in Seton Hill Bus Crash

A bus carrying the Seton Hill University women's lacrosse team crashed Saturday morning on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, killing the team's coach and the bus driver. Twenty other passengers were reportedly injured in the crash. The team had four players from Maryland including goal keeper Kaitlyn Flaskerud who played at Severna Park High School.

5. Rita's Gives Away Hundreds of Free Cups of Ice

Wednesday is one of Rita’s most highly anticipated days of the year—the first day of spring, which means free Italian ice for all.

The Rita’s in Severna Park will give away seven-ounce cups of Italian Ice all day Wednesday—an endeavor owner Rob Marcus says takes several days to prepare for.
