Baltimore County Incumbents Begin Re-Election Bids

Just more than four months before the deadline to run in next year’s primary elections, Baltimore County incumbents offices are starting to file their paperwork to run.

Although the race to be Maryland’s next governor will dominate news coverage through next fall, county residents will also be electing a county executive, county council members and a state’s attorney in 2014.

County Executive

County Executive Kevin Kamenetz is expected to run for re-election, but has not yet filed the official paperwork to do so. There are also no candidates filed to run against him in the Democratic primary.

There are two candidates who filed to try and do what no other member of their party has been able to do since Roger B. Hayden in 1990—be elected county executive as a Republican.

Gregory J. Prush, of Pikesville, has registered to run in the Republican Primary, and Timothy “T3” Tenne, of Towson, is listed as a provisional candidate because he may not meet the Baltimore County Charter’s residency requirement.

State’s Attorney

State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger officially filed earlier this month to seek re-election, and is so far the only candidate in either the Democratic or Republican primaries.

County Council District 3

Councilman Todd Huff, of Lutherville, filed to seek re-election this month and is the sole candidate officially running in the Republican primary. Del. Wade Kach (R-Baltimore County) has said that he intends to run against Huff in the primary, but has not yet filed the paperwork to do so.

County Council District 4 

Councilman Ken Oliver, of Randallstown, filed to run for re-election in October, and he already faces two challengers in the Democratic primary. Julian Earl Jones, of Woodstock, and Makeda Y A Scott, of Owings Mills, who have both filed to run for the seat.

County Council District 5

Councilman David Marks, of Perry Hall, filed to run re-election earlier this month, and so far has no challengers in the Republican primary.

County Council District 6

Jason L. Samios-Uy is the only candidate registered to run in the Republican primary in this East Baltimore County district.
