"Each of these Marylanders was the most important person in the world to someone, and our prayers are with all the family members and loved ones who are grieving," Hogan said in a statement.

"While the worst may be behind us, this virus remains a significant threat to the vulnerable," Hogan said. “Together, as we resolve never to forget any of these 10,011 Marylanders, I ask all the people of our great state to remain Maryland Strong and to have faith that we will emerge from this better and more resilient than ever before.”

Baltimore County announced June 1 it was creating a memorial at Lake Roland to honor the more than 1,500 residents (at the time) who had died from COVID-19.

Proposals were due over the summer, and a finalist will be announced this month to create the freestanding exhibit. It is expected to be in development for several months before being complete in spring 2022, according to the request for proposals from the Baltimore County Arts Guild, which has partnered with the county in the project.
