Maryland Declares State Of Emergency as Hurricane Advances
Kamenetz urges county residents to prepare, watch updates on county website.

UPDATED(3:09p.m.)—Gov. Martin O'Malley has declared a state of emergency for the state in advance of Hurricane Irene.
County Executive Kevin Kamenetz, in a statement released Thursday afternoon, urged county residents to prepare for the storm.
"It is still unclear exactly what path the storm will take, but I encourage all County residents to be prepared to access emergency information if the storm arrives," Kamenetz said in the statement. "I appreciate the media's efforts in helping share this important information with the public."

The county plans to provide storm-related updates on its website and Twitter account.
A list of emergency supplies as well as recommendations for preparing for emergencies can be found on the county's website.

The storm was classified as a Category 3 hurricane Thursday afternoon. It is expected to srengthen as it leaves the Bahamas and moves toward the East Coast of the United States including Maryland this weekend.
O'Malley cancelled a media event for this afternoon and will hold a news conference at the Maryland Emergency Management Agency center in Reisterstown at 3:30 p.m.
