Monday Morning Quarterback: Playoff Picture

Calvert Hall claws its way back to a rematch against Gilman, while Towson beats New Hampshire for the first time.

The MIAA semifinals that played out over the weekend pitted the Baltimore area's best private school teams against each other. The winning teams are moving on to the MIAA conference championships this Friday at Johnny Unitas Stadium. Here's how the games shook out for Towson-area teams.

Calvert Hall blocked a last-second McDonogh field goal to cap a come-from-behind victory over the Eagles on Friday night in  the "A" Conference semifinals, the Towson Times reports. Down 15-3 with just under nine minutes left, running back CJ Williams sparked the comeback when he caught a Thomas Stuart pass and fought his way into the end zone. Calvert Hall faces Gilman next week for the A conference title. Varsity Sports Network has video of the Cardinals' win.

St. Frances 26, 9

The magic ran out late in the game for the Saints in their first-ever playoff game on Saturday, the Towson Times reports. The Saints led after the first half on a touchdown and a safety, but St. Frances shut down Lutheran's offense in the second half, holding them to just 14 yards, in the "C" Conference semifinals. St. Frances, which just formed a football program in 2008, will play Severn in the C Conference finals.

And speaking of playoffs...

56, New Hampshire Wildcats 42

With a win over the No. 7 Wildcats, the Tigers all but sealed their playoff invitation, and are a game away from their first Colonial Athletic Association title. The Tigers came out swinging Saturday, with three first-quarter touchdowns, including an interception returned for a score by Tye Smith  and a 72-yard carry by freshman Terrance West (Northwestern), TowsonTigers.com reports. West ran for 265 yards on the day and beat Tony Vinson's single-season school record for most touchdowns.
