Severe Storms, Extreme Heat Return To MD: Weather Forecast

Heat index values are expected to climb into the 100s on Friday, while storms could bring damaging winds to the Baltimore region.

Heat and humidity are expected to rise throughout Maryland on Thursday, with temperatures set to spike on Friday, according to the latest forecasts. Daily chances for showers and some severe thunderstorms also return on Friday and continue through the weekend.

Heat index values will rise as high as 109 degrees on Friday, posing potentially life-threatening conditions, the National Weather Service warned. Temperatures will be well into the 90s for most as the new weather front ushers in choking humidity.

A heat advisory is in effect for portions of central, north-central, northeast, northern and southern Maryland, starting at 11 a.m. Friday and continuing through 8 p.m., according to the NWS.

"Dangerously hot and humid conditions will lead to an increased risk of heat-related illnesses on Friday," the NWS said.

Thunderstorms are also possible on Friday, forecasters said. One or two storms could be severe, mainly along the I-95 corridor to northern Maryland. Damaging wind gusts are the main threat.

As the heat persists, storms are possible both Saturday and Sunday, according to The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang. The chances for severe weather also extend into next week.

"Saturday and Sunday hold more potential to set off afternoon and evening storms with locally heavy downpours possible," the Capital Weather Gang said. "Sunshine is a bit more abundant on Monday and Tuesday, and showers and storms are generally isolated in nature."
