Towson Attorney, Catonsville Man Killed in England Car Accident

A Towson attorney and two sons-in-law were killed in a car crash in England earlier this week.

Stephen Hughes, 57, and sons-in-law Gregory Brooks, 39, of Catonsville and Andrew Pain, 31, of London were killed Monday evening when their Mercedes-Benz car, driven by Pain, swerved off the road and hit two trees before rolling down an embankment, The Baltimore Sun reports.

The Guardian has an account from the night of the crash. Hughes' daughters, Angela H. Brooks and Sarah Hughes Pain, survived and are currently hospitalized, according to The Sun.

Hughes, a Ten Hills resident, was a founding partner in the Towson law firm Treanor Pope and Hughes, which opened in 1992, and specialized in medical malpractice cases.

"We're all still in a state of shock right now," said attorney Mark Treanor. "Steve was just a wonderful human being as an individual, a consummate trial lawyer but more importantly he was just a generous, good spirited, basically warm-hearted guy."

Treanor said the gregarious Hughes enjoyed watching theater and the occasional round of golf and was active in his masonic lodge.

"You could be a prince or a pauper and he liked you just the same. Just a tremendous man in so many different respects. It's just a terrible loss for any of us, his colleagues in the law firm and his family," he said. "Steve had more friends than anybody I ever met, and I mean real, genuine friends."

Funeral arrangements are pending.

Hughes attended the University of Maryland School of Law. The Sun reports that he was once a partner at the Baltimore firm Miles & Stockbridge.

He graduated Cardinal Gibbons High School in 1972.
