Towson U. to Host Viewing Party for NCAA Playoff Selection

Towson University's ticket to the FCS playoffs is punched.

This fall, the Towson Tigers football team has gone further than most had expected. On Sunday, after the Tigers play their last regular-game at Rhode Island on Saturday, they'll find out where their next stop is.

Towson University is hosting a for the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision playoff selection show. The announcements begin at 10 a.m., on ESPNU, and the event at Towson will include giveaways and autographs.

Towson (8-2, 6-1 Colonial Athletic Association) is tied with Maine for the conference lead. The CAA is one of the top FCS conferences. A CAA team has made it to the FCS championship each of the last five years.

Towson is currently ranked either No. 8 or No. 10, depending on the poll.  The Tigers will make the playoffs even if they lose Saturday at Rhode Island.  What is at stake in the final regular-season game is playoff seeding and earning a home game.

The CAA is one of 10 conferences with an automatic bid into the 20-team field. The matchups are based on several factors, including rankings.

Here's an explanation about how that works. 

If Towson is one of the 12 teams to get a first-round bye, its first playoff game will be Saturday, Dec. 3. If not, the Tigers will play in the first round on Thanksgiving weekend.

As long as the Tigers win, they are guaranteed no worse than a share of their first conference title, according to CAA Sports. In the event of a tie, Towson locked the conference's automatic bid by beating Maine, New Hampshire and Old Dominion.
