Towson University Prepares to Shelter up to 600 Hurricane Irene Refugees
International students working at resorts in Ocean City are expected Thursday evening.

As many as 600 international students are expected to temporarily move into gymnasiums at Towson University in advance of Hurricane Irene.
The students, all of whom have been working at various resorts in Ocean City, are expected on the campus around 6 p.m., Thursday, according to Carol Dunsworth, a spokeswoman for the university.
The university expects 100 to 600 students to take temporary shelter in three gyms inside Burdick Hall. The Red Cross will handle feeding the students while they are at the university, Dunsworth said.

The evacuations from the shore town to Towson come just as the university is expecting to welcome 4,000 students moving in this weekend for the start of the academic year.
"We don't expect it will impact students moving in at all," Dunsworth said.

University officials are expected to meet later today to discuss preparations for Hurricane Irene, which is expected to impact the area over the weekend.
Dunsworth said the university is treating the storm and its refugees and the annual move-in "as two separate events" and didn't expect one to impact the other.
