Water Main Breaks Under Washington Avenue Streetscape

The 8-inch main broke during the Tuesday morning rush hour. Crews will likely have to tear up the brickwork laid earlier this year.

A Tuesday morning water main break could result in water outages in downtown Towson.

The break at Washington Avenue and Bankers Way occurred sometime during the morning rush, said Kurt Kocher, a Baltimore City Department of Public Works spokesman.

Kocher said in an email that crews will hold off on shutting down water in the area until 6 p.m., in order to minimize impact in downtown Towson

He said he wasn't sure how many customers could be out of water.

"Until we get it shut down, we don't really know how many people, if any, are going to be out of water," he said.

Nancy Hafford, executive director of the , said she saw water flowing down the street when she arrived at work at 8:30 a.m.

"There was quite a bit of water coming out," she said. "You could tell there was a water break underground."

Kocher said in an email that the brickwork is being "gently removed and replaced."

Hafford said she worried about the impact of the break on the street and, more immediately, the Towson Farmers' Market, which was
