‘Unsung Hero’: Clinton Teacher Shout-Out

CLINTON, MD — Great teachers matter. In Clinton, we're fortunate to have teachers like Dr. Shawntae Samuels.

How do you know the teacher?

She's my daughter.

What does this person teach?

Fourth-grade math.

Why do you believe the teacher should be recognized or honored?

Because Dr. Samuels works very hard, gets low pay, and needs to know that she is recognized and honored. Dr. Samuels is often our unsung hero and deserves to be recognized and honored. The pay is low for the amount of education she had to earn a teaching credential/degree and the hours she put into her job. She often leaves school at the end of her teaching day and after she spends time with her child, she would stay up late at night working on refining/modifying her lesson plans. Who would see this? No one.

In my opinion, she works very hard, cares a lot about doing her best for her students, and does not get recognition or appreciation from society in general. She did not go into teaching to get recognition. She did it because she enjoys helping others to learn, she enjoys kids, and she wants a meaningful career.

Finally, Dr. Samuels needs to be recognized and honored. Her job is hard but meaningful and important and she is often our unsung hero.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the teacher?

Dr. Samuels has always been a hardworking individual who cares about children's learning abilities.
