For younger children, establishing a routine is important.
Christine Kreiner Stidham shared her tips on Westminster Patch's Facebook page, “Starting two weeks prior to the first day of school I have them get showers and go to bed at normal time and wake them up at normal time. During the summer I have them read and do math to keep their brains active."

It's also important to get back to a routine if you've let kids stay up later or sleep in during the summer.
"I have my daughter go to bed at her new bed time two weeks before school," wrote Paula Burton on Westminster Patch's Facebook page. "I find out a week before school what time she will have lunch so she can start eating lunch at the same time."
The efforts of parents to get their children ready for school isn't overlooked by teachers.
"Thank you, parents!" wrote Doris Lee Mason on the Anne Arundel County Patch Facebook page. "It is really hard to teach a sleeping child. Teachers appreciate your effort."
