Westminster: A Haven For History, Nature And Art

Every town has its traditions. Check out these fun facts about what makes Westminster so special.

Westminster is a place like no other. And whether you grew up here, recently moved to the area or you’re just an occasional visitor, you know that Westminster has its own special traditions and history that make it so unique.

A few things to know:

  • In 1777, the Continental Congress met in the Westminster courthouse and passed the Articles of Confederation, the first constitution of the United States. Today, visitors can explore the historic courthouse, which has been preserved as a museum.
  • If you're a fan of art, Westminster is home to the Carroll County Arts Council, which features rotating exhibits of local and regional artists. The council also hosts concerts, performances and workshops throughout the year, making it a hub for creative expression in the community.
  • For those looking to enjoy the great outdoors, Westminster has several beautiful parks to explore. Piney Run Park offers hiking trails, fishing and boating on its 300-acre lake. Westminster Community Pond is a popular spot for fishing and picnicking, while Bennett Cerf Park is a great place to relax and enjoy the scenery.
  • Did you know that Westminster is home to McDaniel College, the second-oldest college in Maryland? Founded in 1867, the college has a beautiful campus that's open to the public. Visitors can take a stroll through the campus, admire the historic architecture and attend events like lectures, concerts and theatrical performances.
  • Westminster is home to the Union Mills Homestead, a historic farm that dates back to the 1790s. Visitors can explore the farm's original buildings, including the mill and the mansion, and learn about the site's important role in Maryland's agricultural history.
  • If you're a fan of craft beer, be sure to visit Johansson's Dining House in downtown Westminster. The restaurant has its own onsite brewery, offering a rotating selection of delicious and unique brews to enjoy with your meal.
  • The Carroll County Farm Museum is another must-visit attraction in Westminster. The museum features a variety of exhibits and events that showcase the county's agricultural heritage, including a working farm, antique farm equipment and a blacksmith shop.
  • For a fun family outing, head to Hashawha Environmental Center. The center has over 300 acres of beautiful natural space to explore, with hiking trails, fishing ponds and a nature center that offers educational programs and events.
  • If you're looking for a sweet treat, be sure to stop by Baugher's Orchard and Farm. The family-owned farm offers a variety of fresh produce, baked goods and homemade ice cream, as well as fun activities like pick-your-own apples and hayrides.
  • If you're interested in history, be sure to visit the Historical Society of Carroll County. The society has a museum and research library that showcases the county's rich history, including exhibits on the Underground Railroad and local industry.
  • The city of Westminster hosts several annual events that draw visitors from near and far, including the Westminster Wine Stroll and the Flower & Jazz Festival.
  • For a unique shopping experience, check out the B&D Auctions. The auction house offers a variety of antiques and collectibles, including rare and unique items that you won't find anywhere else. The auctions are held every other Monday; selling 1,500 lots per auction. It occupies the space where the old O’Farrell’s Auction took place years ago.
