8 Thanksgiving Books for Children

A Wheaton librarian shares her recommendations for the holiday.

If you have kids coming over for Thanksgiving, you may want to swing by and pick up one of these books recommended by the children’s librarian, Bonita Glatstein. There are limited copies, so hurry over before they run out.

1. The Very First Thanksgiving Day, by Rhonda Greene
It’s the story of the first Thanksgiving, told in cumulative rhyme.

2. Thanksgiving Day, by Anne Rockwell
This simple picture book is sure to delight small children.

3. Thanks a Million, by Nikki Grimes
This book of poetry celebrates what makes us thankful.

4. The Book of Giving, by Kay Chorao
This book contains poems of thanks, praise and celebration.

5. Giving Thanks: A Native American Good Morning Message, by Chief Jake Swamp
This picture book is the children’s version of the Thanksgiving Address, which is still spoken at ceremonial gatherings of the Iroquois.

6. Molly’s Pilgrim, by Barbara Cohen
The story of Molly, a young Russian Jewish immigrant, expands the definition of pilgrim to include more than just those who are said to have celebrated the first Thanksgiving.

7. Marlo Thomas and Friends: Thanks & Giving All Year Long, edited by Marlo Thomas and Christopher Cerf
This anthology brings together big names like Mel Brooks and Maurice Sendak to reflect on the spirit of thanksgiving--but not just on Thanksgiving Day.
