Giant Recalls Mangoes for Salmonella Risk

stores are halting sales of Daniella mangoes because of possible salmonella contamination. The voluntary recall from product distributor Splendid warns customers about the mangoes sold throughout the United States between July 12 and Aug. 29, 2012.

“We want to let everyone know our top priority is public safety,” said Splendid Products General Manager Larry Nienkerk. “We have notified all of our customers and we are working with all the government agencies that are involved. We didn’t want to wait.”

The recall was prompted after the fruit was linked to recent cases of salmonellosis in Canada and possibly California.

The Mexican product was sold as an individual fruit and can be identified by the Daniella brand sticker under any of the following product numbers: 3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 or 4959.

FDA Warns Signs Of Salmonella Infection Are:

• Diarrhea

• Abdominal cramps

• Fever

The signs usually manifest between 8 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and up to seven days. Although most people recover without treatment, the FDA says salmonellosis can be severe.

Salmonellosis, which is caused by Salmonella, can be life-threatening for infants, older people, pregnant women and people with weakened immune systems.
