250 Reusable Bags Given Away in Wheaton Triangle

It was a cold and blustery Tuesday afternoon, with the first snow flurries of 2012 swirling around the parking lot in the Wheaton Triangle.

Marian Fryer stood with Jane Barrett (of Friends of Sligo Creek) outside The , an iconic cake decorating store established more than 30 years ago. 

The two women were doing six miles away at a Hillandale Safeway: distributing free reusable bags. As of January 1, for every paper or plastic bag they use at a retail establishment, according to a law in Montgomery County.

Outside The Little Bitts Shop this afternoon, the 250 bags disappeared quickly, and there were none left by 12:30, according to Bob Schilke, the shop's owner.

Was it a success? "I would say so," Schilke said.
