Week Ahead in Wheaton: Soul Crackers and Showers

Here are five things to know for Monday, July 22, and the week ahead.

1. EVENT >> Free music! Don’t miss the Downtown Wheaton TGIF Summer Concert this Friday, featuring Motown jams from Soul Crackers.

2. WEATHER >> After last week’s scorching temperatures, forecasters say showers are rolling in for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

3. YOU SAID IT >> What should Wheaton’s new town square look like? People are sharing ideas on this Wheaton Patch article. Here’s one comment from Randall Spadoni:

Integrate the surrounding streets and businesses into the square, including outside seating for restaurants and pubs. Allow us to close the triangle to car traffic on some evenings and weekends, opening up new space for markets and larger events. An orientation towards families (spray fountain, areas for kids to play) will bring kids and parents out during the day times in addition to office traffic. And bring something signature into the square and surrounding buildings, something positive that will help to distinguish and define Wheaton... perhaps linked to our ethnic diversity or to Brookside Gardens and Wheaton Regional Park?

4. BLOG HIGHLIGHT >> What will it take to make a “walkable” Wheaton? That’s the question Ed Murtagh explores in his latest blog post. Ed writes: “In addition to public space, we need to make Wheaton a destination for people to live, work and visit. We need to inspire people with urban architectural design, window displays, streetscaping and landscaping.”
