WalletHub released on Monday its annual rankings of the best and worst school systems among the 50 states and Washington, D.C.

ACROSS MASSACHUSSETTS — When it comes to educating students and preparing them for the future, no state does it better than Massachusetts, according to a news study.

Massachusetts took the No. 1 overall spot. According to the study, the state has the highest reading and math test scores in the country. It tied with both Connecticut and New Hampshire for highest median ACT score. When it comes to safety and quality, Massachusetts also ranks first.

Massachusetts was followed by Connecticut (No. 2), New Jersey (No. 3), Virginia (No. 4) and New Hampshire (No. 5).

According to the study, the worst school systems in the country are New Mexico (No. 1), Louisiana (No. 2), Arizona (No. 3), Alaska (No. 4) and Alabama (No. 5).

To determine the best and worst states for public-school education, WalletHub compared the 50 states and the District of Columbia across two key dimensions, “quality” and “safety.” It then evaluated those dimensions using 32 relevant metrics, which included performance, funding, safety, class size and instructor credentials.
