Out of the 31 Arlington establishments subjected to alcohol compliance checks this year, five vendors served alcohol to underage individuals working with the police, according to a press release from the Arlington Police Department.

Chief Frederick Ryan emphasizes that selling booze to those less than 21 years of age is by no means a harmless transgression.

“We have had many tragedies in the past involving youth and alcohol in our community,” he said, in a statement. “We aim to create a culture among our licensed establishments in which compliance with the provisions of their liquor license and adherence to the law is among their highest priorities.”

On March 30, those who failed the Jan. 22 compliance checks - all of which were first-time offenders - had their liquor licenses suspended for three days. More compliance checks were performed on March 12, and the Arlington Board of Selectmen will meet to discuss the results of those checks at a later date.
