Police: Vehicle Struck a Curb and Went Airborne for Approximately 60 Feet

The cars tire rods and control arms had been snapped off, and there were also several other parts of the car that had been torn off.

Officers responded to investigate the report of a single-car crash just before 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 5. with no reported injury.

A officer observed a brown 2012, Toyota Camry at the intersection of Edmund Road and Summer Street. The Toyota was facing eastbound and was physically on Edmund Road blocking traffic that would have been turning from Summer Street onto Edmund Road.

The driver was fine and did not require medical treatment. He told officers he had just dropped a friend off in Lowell and was returning home. The driver stated that he was using the GPS function on his phone to navigate back to his residence, and stated that he was traveling down the hill and is not sure what happened.

Officer’s Note: The hill is Forest Street which intersects with Summer Street after a sharp right turn at the bottom of the hill. It should also be noted that there was moderate damage to the front of the vehicle as well as the vehicles steering system. The cars tire rods and control arms had been snapped off and there were also several other parts of the car that had been torn off during the crash on the ground.

An officer did not observe any tire skids on Forest St. where the road begins to turn prior to intersecting with Summer Street, though the officer noticed the planter in the island before Edmund Road.

There were several torn-up flowers as well as a sign that had been run over. There was also a small tree that had been debarked when the passenger side made contact with the tree trunk.

Again the officer did not observe any signs that indicated the vehicle operator had attempted to stop as it continued across the sidewalk and eventually coming to rest on Edmund Road It is estimated that when the vehicle struck the curb and left the roadway that it traveled approximately 60 feet before the front-end dug into the pavement stopping that car.

Dispatch then notified this officer that a witness to the incident had returned home and would be available to give a statement via phone.

The vehicle was towed, and the driver was cited with operating to endanger and impeded operation. It should be noted that while speaking with OP officers did not feel that he was impaired in any manor.
