Mass. Delegates Pen Op-Ed Supporting Healey, Assault Weapons Ban Enforcement

From Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey on down, national representatives formalized support for Attorney General Maura Healey Thursday.

It's been slow-coming, but Democrats are now making a concerted effort to rally around Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey, assailed by critics since her mid-July decision to enforce an aspect of the state assault weapons ban that critics say is not only confusing, but an overstep of her powers.

Led by Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, Massachusetts' congressional delegation signed onto a short op-ed in today's paper supporting the AG. The letter reads in part:

"We are proud to stand united in our support for Attorney General Maura Healey as she courageously works to enforce the assault weapons ban.
Maura Healey is not creating new laws. She is enforcing a law the state legislature put on the books nearly 20 years ago to protect our communities from gun violence. And, as Attorney General, she has that authority and responsibility."

It formalizes the support previously expressed by many of the same legislators on Twitter. It also follows another show of support last week over a highly politicized climate change lawsuit pursued by Healey's office, as well as the New York Attorney General.

Also today, a select group of state mayors will be speaking about a letter of their own, also penned in support of the state's attorney general. Read more on that, her enforcement action, and the critiques to Healey's decision here.
